Period Quill Fuses  (artillery fuse) was originally made using the tips of goose feathers, hence the name quill fuse.  The feather quill was cut-off  2 inches long.  The open end top portion of the quill fuse was cut-open and  flattened, forming a lip.  The closed tip of the quill fuse was slit lengthwise 1/4".  ( photos below show cannon fuse quill )

The hollow tube of the quill fuse was filled with fine black powder.  The lip portion of the quill fuse was coated with adhesive and then dipped into black powder.  The adhesive on the lip of the cannon fuse not only held the black powder on the fuse face, but also served to seal the top end of the fuse tube. The slit in the tip of the quill fuse would allow flames to shoot out when lit, but stayed closed and kept the powder from leaking out.  ( photos below show cannon fuse - real quill fuse )

Modern Quill Fuses  from our kit are made using a paper straw.  The paper straw quill fuse has a large "circular" lip.  The quill fuse tube is filled with fine black powder, and the circular quill fuse lip portion of the quill fuse is coated with adhesive and dipped into black powder.  The adhesive on the fuse lip holds the black powder on its face and also served to seal the top end of the fuse tube. The bottom of the fuse tube is pinch glued which allows flames to shoot out when lit, but stays closed and keeps the powder from leaking out.  (finished fuse length = 2" = 1/2 sec. burn)

Quill Fuses will work with any cannon with a 0.18 inch or larger vent.  They provide a "hot jet flame" into the cannon chamber.  Our kit contains materials for 100 Cannon Fuse with easy to follow step-by-step instructions.  (straws shipped in 8" length - you cut the straws to final length of 2-5/8")  All that's needed is a pair of scissors, the glue, and the 4Fg black powder.  Specified glue for making Cannon Fuse is available at any office store.  ( photo shows paper straw Cannon Fuse kit )
